8 Easy Drinks Recipes for your Next Camping Trip

When it comes to happy hour, stale peanuts and crowded bars are overrated. Our most enjoyable hours are in the woods, where you won’t find any tap handles to satisfy your thirst.

If your drink of choice while camping is comprised of instant coffee and filtered water, it might be time to change things up. Consider the following recipes to keep you hydrated in a fun way, some of which do contain alcohol.

  1. Mexican Mocha

While this isn’t known as a happy hour drink, it will wake you up in the morning after a grueling hike. Even though instant coffee has been enhanced over the last ten years, it’s still not perfect. However, when you add some cinnamon, cocoa, and spices, it becomes a whole new and tasty drink. Feel free to make this in your home. Simply adjust the scale based on the number of cups you require, then place it inside a bag that can be resealed. When you’re camping, simply portion out what you brought.

  • Two tablespoons powdered milk
  • Three tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Two tablespoons sugar
  • One tablespoon instant coffee creamer (if desired)
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • One serving of instant coffee (see directions on packet)

In the bottom of your bag, place all dry ingredients. Add a couple of tablespoons of hot water and mix until the concoction turns into a paste. Add the remainder of your hot water while stirring regularly.

  1. Rocket Fuel

In mornings where time is of the essence, and you need a jolt to kick start your day, try drinking one of these.

  • 1 CLIF SHOT Energy Gel Double Expresso
  • One packet hot cocoa mix
  • 8 ounces of hot water

(Add a spoonful of instant coffee to make it a Red Eye)

Combine all the ingredients and drink up!

  1. NUUN Tea

No matter if it’s cold or hot out, electrolytes and hydration are vital. This combination of hot tea and NUUN hydration tablets produce a refreshing-yet-warming drink.

  • One bag of black tea
  • 1 NUUN tablet
  • 16 ounces of hot water

After steeping the tea in hot water, add a tablet to the liquid and wait for it to dissolve.

  1. Orange Creamsicle Power Shake

While Tang is a camping favorite, it lacks any nutritional value. You can modify that and get a big boost of protein after a day of climbing, hiking, or paddling.

  • One serving of vanilla protein powder (serving sizes differ; see container for specifics)
  • One packet of Tang
  • 1-2 drops of vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces of cold water (approximately a cup and a half)

For blending purposes, use a shaker-style bottle. A water bottle will do if that’s all you have. Use the bottle to mix the powdered ingredients.

Shake the bottle vigorously after dropping the vanilla into the water. It will taste like a milkshake if it’s nice and frothy.

  1. Backcountry (Adult) Lemonade
  • 5 ounces of your choice of gin
  • One cup of Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix
  • Wild berries (bring your own if desired)
  • 6 ounces water

Try to make this near a mountain stream. That way, you can store your water and gin directly in the stream to keep them cool. It’s not required, though. Combine all ingredients into a water bottle and drink up after shaking.

  1. Blueberry Mojito Summer Smash

For this drink, Victory Ranch’s Adam Price, an executive chef, suggests using any NUUN hydration tablet – he opts for the lime and lemon flavor. You’ll need blueberries for this mix – bring some purchased from a store. If you choose to pick your own berries, ensure the ones you consume aren’t harmful to your health.

  • 2-3 fresh mint leaves
  • A handful of blueberries (it’s okay if they get a little squashed)
  • Splash of water
  • 5 ounces bourbon
  • ½ of a lime and lemon NUUN tablet

Begin by locating a stream to keep your bourbon cool. Rip mint leaves and put them in a cup. Place the blueberries in the cup and crush them with a fork or spoon. Add water, bourbon, and the NUUN tablet. While the tablet dissolves, stir up the mix.

  1. NUUN Berry Camparita

The salt evident in NUUN tablets creates a rimmed margarita flavor. The drink doesn’t contain any sugar, making it ideal for those who don’t care for sweet-tasting alcohol.

  • 5 ounces tequila
  • One lime and lemon NUUN tablet
  • 8 ounces water
  • ½ tri-berry NUUN tablet

Use a nearby river to cool down your tequila and water. Place the NUUN tablets in a cup and fill it with tequila and water. Mix and allow the tablets to completely dissolve prior to consumption.

  1. Snowcone Julep
  • 1/2 ounces simple syrup (consider mixing this with rye prior to leaving for camp)
  • 2 ounces rye whiskey
  • Fresh snow
  • 4-5 mint leaves

Grab an 8-ounce cup and place a few mint leaves in the bottom of it. For mint lovers, think about using your hand to bruise up the leaves before putting them in the cup. Use fresh snow to fill the cup, specifically snow that is well-packed rather than delicate and powdery. Add rye and the syrup combination, stir, and enjoy.
